Me: I agree wholly.
The #EndSARS hashtag is just one more youthful hashtag thriving on that funky train called ‘bangwagon’ which never gets filled up.
No single tale of SARS lawlessness and brutality I’ve read so far that is more heinous or more ruthless than what I have either heard of or witnessed first hand from the parent body, the NPF.
SARS is rotten because NPF is. So are other sub-units of the NPF like the CID, the Special Fraud Unit (SFU), the Intelligence Response Squad (IRT) and many others. SARS should not be expected to be anything better than its parent body. Fish na for head e dey begin rotten.
If you end SARS, will you have ended the regular police officers that raid neighbourhoods regularly to arrest innocent boys watching football in a viewing center? Will you have ended the regular police illegal detentions without prosecution? Will ending SARS put an end to illegal road blocks mounted by the police for extortion and harassment of citizens? Please, if ending SARS will achieve all these, by all means, #EndSARS. If not, let’s raise a hashtag to push for the entire police force to be reformed for better and humane policing.
Having some special police units is a very normal practice the world over. SARS was established and structured to go the extra mile in combating armed robbery. That is a noble intent. That it became a menace does not annihilate the nobility of the raison d’etre for establishing it. Everything concerning the NPF as presently constituted is sickening, to say the least. SARS is just a family member.
Let’s push for a total overhauling of our police force. That’s where I stand.

I like the line this debate is towing….

Mind you all the operations set up by the Army was one time or the other dismantled. Most especially when gross misdeeds are noticed….

At least normal police can be reported.
How do you report SARS when there’s no way of identifying them beyond the black jacket.

The tragedy of our circumstance and the shallowness of this campaign is purgent in the dismissive arguments of the campaigners…
“SARS is evil, end SARS.”
“It’s because you haven’t been a victim”…etc….

Bros, uniformed police guys have cocked rifles at me on three occasions in this Lagos and threatened to ‘waste’ me. A DPO of Police once bracketed me at Dopemu and pulled a pistol on me. No be only SARS officials dey misbehave. Don’t conclude based on your personal experience. It’s myopic.

Bros SARS worse abeg. Maybe because they report directly to the IG instead of the CP of the host state which is an anomaly in itself that needs checking via disbanding them or restructuring
